Times have changed since the Holden one tonner was the tradies ute of choice.

Over the last few decades the Japanese utes have taken over, with the Toyota Hilux becoming the most popular vehicle in Australia.

But the Europeans are now coming. First it was the VW Amorak, and now we have a new Mercedes-Benz dual cab ute on the way!

Mercedes-Benz Ute

As you can see from the photo above it’s quite a flash looking unit.

Mercedes aren’t totally foreign to tradies. Their line of vans, including the Vito and Sprinter, have been popular with plumbers for years now.

But would a tradie be willing to turn up to a worksite in a rig like this? Could they expect to cop a ribbing from the other blokes on site?

And what about turning up to a client’s house to rewire a switch driving a big gold Mercedes? It mightn’t be the best look!

Mercedes include Australia as one of the four “primary target markets” for their ute, so they obviously think they can sell a few down here.

As for whether or not the Mercedes will be any good as a working ute, the underpinnings actually come from the tried and tested Nissan Navara.

With a one tonne carrying capacity the new Mercedes ute should be popular as a tax deduction with many workers, even those who don’t actually need a ute.

AMG Ute…?

The big question for car nuts is whether or not Mercedes will release an AMG version of the ute.

The current 4WD AMG vehicles, including the ML63 and GL63, pack a monster 400kW / 760Mn twin turbo V8.

A dual cab ute with this sort of power on tap would be something pretty special.

Of course if all this is not good enough for you, there’s always the option of the G63 AMG 6×6…
